Equity implies fair opportunities in access to and quality of education. Equity in education comprises a 360degrees approach overcoming any barrier that pupils may face in acquiring a standard education.
Every human being is valuable regardless of their background and station in life. The education offered is required to reflect and enhance this concept.
Learning without guidance and the aspect of curiosity is an innate human quality and should be encouraged often. This skill ensures that people dive deep into a subject and understand it rather than memorize it.
Networking and collaboration help in finishing and improving the bigger picture. This also allows us to learn from each other, broadening our minds and correcting the mistakes that can be heard from a ‘single story.
Equity through Education was founded in May 2020 during the COVID pandemic lockdown as Equity Through Books. It was inspired by the experience of Julie Susan Wawira Njiruh who was then a Standard 8 KCPE candidate. She was concerned that while her private school quickly organized online classes and she had her own set of textbooks and revision texts, candidates in public schools had been sent home without either yet were expected to sit the same examination that was scheduled for that year.
Julie Susan responded to this need and selected Kerarapon Primary School in her neighbourhood to be a pilot project for schools’ assistance. After liaising with the school Head Teacher and her Lincoln Leadership trainer, a fundraising campaign was started on M-Changa and Standard 8 revision texts were purchased from High Flyer Publishers and delivered to the school. The school performance in that year was among the best that it had ever had.

We strive to make a long-lasting impact on those who are aided so the effects are still felt for years to come. Education should support sustainable development and give learners various skills and knowledge that make them global changemakers.
When in-person classes resumed for the candidates after the lockdown it became clear that there were many other needs that the pupils had in order to concentrate in class and successfully sit the examination. It was at this point that the project was renamed Equity Through Education to encompass all the needs that a pupil requires to remain in school. The project later presented examination supplies and motivational gifts to pupils under the direction of the school on the urgent needs of the pupils. The project has continued and also supplies sanitary pads to girls in schools.
Donate NowWHY EQUITY AND NOT EQUALITY?
Culture and backgrounds are very different in all communities. Economic status varies widely and it is difficult to attain equality. Further, human beings have different aspirations, motivations and competencies. The principle of equity allows resources and assistance to be provided to all while respecting their unique situation and world view but allowing all a fair chance to improve their personal life conditions and positively impact society in future. ETE works for both the girl child and boy child in schools striving to ensure that each child has a fair chance to achieve their personal best.
The ETE team engages in various activities that support the good health and well-being of learners. These include feeding programmes, provision of hygiene products, de-worming and stomach health awareness. The team also supports schools in engaging parents in order to sensitize them on the need for good care of the pupil and sound family support to ensure learning success. Mental Health care and awareness for school-goers is a central concern for ETE. This has become of increasing concern following the COVID pandemic and the challenging economic times in the country.
ETE aims to ensure that every learner gets an education of a certain standard to reduce the equity gaps present. We aim to improve education from the early development stage to post-secondary studies. As of 2018, approximately 40% of students that did the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams go on to do the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and a study done in 2021 indicated that about 1.13 million students between the ages of 6–13 are out of school. ETE objects to better the situation and make sure that they receive good quality education.
While ETE focuses on equity, it aligns itself with this SDG to the extent that all students should have access to the same quality of reading material and resources for examination purposes. The team works with publishers to ensure that quality reading material is available. It supports access to the internet to enable learners access information for themselves.

“Education provides everyone an equal opportunity to rise to the highest level of society regardless of the background, gender or race. It is in context equity through education was founded. Once fully implemented the foundation will accelerate realization of SDG 4 (Quality education) SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDSDG 10 (Reduced inequities) in addition to expedite realization of Kenyan’s Vision 2030. It is for this reason; I call upon all humankind to contribute in whichever way to make Equity Through Education (ETE) Foundation a success.”
